Rabbi Aron Menachem nominated for the 2023 Jewish Changemaker Award

As 2023 comes to an end, Chabad of RARA is very proud of Rabbi Menachem Aron, who was recently nominated as one of 36 individuals for the 2023 Jewish Changemaker Award.

Established in 2013, the B’nai B’rith and JNF Youth & Young Adult Changemaker Awards, is a platform that honours and celebrates our community’s young activists, leaders and entrepreneurs who make a difference in professional and volunteer capacities. These talented individuals are building a more just society, ensuring the health and wellness of global communities and creating community in innovative ways.

The nomination reads as follows:

Menachem is the director of Chabad of RARA, Rural and Regional Australia. On a daily basis, Menachem is directing teams, programs, services, lifecycle events and educational workshops or classes, for as many as 200 to as few as one small child. Menachem works tirelessly to make sure no Jew is missed or forgotten, from Uluru to Wollongong, from Bundanoon to Karratha and every small place across the land.

Menachem and his many teams drive thousands of kilometres just to bring a bottle of grape juice and challah or some Shabbos candles to welcome the Shabbos Queen or so a little girl can light up her corner of Australia with some spiritual light!

The RARA mobile, a specially fitted out campervan, covers tens of thousands of kilometres a year, with volunteers coming from the United States and Europe.

The mobile home is equipped with everything one could need for a stint on the road, to ensure that the Jews who might not have easy access to everything Jewish, do. Chabad of RARA services approximately 20,000 Jews in rural and regional Australia.

There's nothing quite like seeing Uluru in real life.

And yesterday, for the first time, in almost 6 years, the RARA Mitzva Mobile Library made it to this majestic spot.

The pictures speak for themselves. Have you been here?

What about the Jewish connection? Well, stay tuned for more about that in our next post!

Scenes from the small, but vibrant, Jewish community in Central Australia.

Our rabbis made the 2,500km journey to the Red Center, where they have been providing support for the local community. They hosted a Shabbat meal for 10 Jewish locals, and spent yesterday going around to families to say hello and offer the opportunity to wrap the Tefillin.

Us Jews are no strangers to living in deserts, yet still remaining connected!

Thanks you to Rael for hosting the rabbis during their stay in Alice Springs.

If you are around, get in touch. The rabbis have just made fresh Challah for the Shabbat meal tonight.

Shabbat Shalom!

Night 8 in Coffs Harbour NSW!

After many miles on the road, we made it to beautiful Coffs Harbour, and were joined by the warm community in Coffs. It was so beautiful to see the Menorah fully lit up, and to meet some more Jewish members for the first time.

It has been a truly inspiring 8 days, with many new relationships forged around NSW and VIC.

Let's keep the inspiration burning throughout the whole year!

Did you guess it right?

Our previous post asked if you knew where the RARA Mitzva Mobile Library was headed.

Well, here it is! The rabbis had just departed Port Augusta and were heading up the Stuart Highway. Last night they stopped in Coober Pedy, made contact with one of the only Jews in town (woohoo!) and are now headed to Alice Springs where they will be hosting a Shabbat meal!

Some evening trivia for you

Which highway is the RARA Mitzva Mobile Library on, and where are the rabbis headed to?

Hint: the next turn they need to make is in 574 kilometres!

Chanuka in Port Macquarie on night number 7

It was a windy day, but that didn't stop us from lighting and relighting the Menorah over and over to ensure that it kept burning strong. Sometimes the wind may howl and rage, but the light continues to shine!

Thank you Gary for once again hosting this wonderful community!

Rabbis Yaacov and Pinchos in Adelaide, SA, Australia.

Rabbis Yaacov and Pinchos met up with their new friend Levan today in Adelaide. Levan was able to wrap the Tefillin, and has now got a new book from the RARA Mitzva Mobile Library!

Tomorrow the rabbis will be heading north towards Port Augusta. How many Jewish people do you think they will find there?

Chanuka in Muswellbrook NSW.

What's known as a small mining town, is now also known as a Chanuka gathering point!

We came together with Jewish families from Denman, Aberdeen and Scone to celebrate the sixth night of Chanuka. What a lovely time we had!

But then trouble hit. It was too windy and despite our best efforts, the Menorah just would not stay lit. So we headed inside, and from the comfort of the John Hunter Hotel, we were able to kindle all six, and sing joyfully.

A truly joyous occasion!

Dreidels in Dubbo

As we headed towards Dubbo, we watched the mercury climb to a blistering 40°c. But that didn't stop us from having a great time catching up with some of the locals and lighting the Menorah, as well as some awesome face painting.

Thank you to Kate and Abe for hosting us once again!

Lighting up the fourth candle on the big Menorah.

What an awesome time we had in Katoomba last night,  lighting up the fourth candle on the big Menorah.

We also had an in depth discussion about our thoughts on the Holy Land and each of our individual reactions.

Thank you to all those that came!

Tonight we see off to Dubbo.

The local community in Wollongong got together on Friday for a special Chanuka party and Shabbat meal.

Di and Ivan were honoured with the lighting of the giant Menorah.

Thank you to Yoke and Bill for once again hosting! We had a blast.
