Learn how to borrow books from the RARA Jewish Mobile Public Library – Australia’s travelling Jewish library.
With hundreds of titles for all ages, the RJMPL makes quality Jewish books available to anyone in rural and regional Australia. You can borrow in two ways:
- On board the library motorhome when it visits your area
- Remotely via our online catalog, with books posted to your door
What is the RARA Jewish Mobile Public Library?
The RJMPL is a converted motorhome that houses hundreds of Jewish books and travels all over Australia. To date, the library has travelled more than 120,000 kilometres and has visited almost every state and territory.
Follow us on Facebook to find out where the library is going next, and when it might be near you.
How do I borrow a book?
Option 1: Hop on board
When the RJMPL visits your area, simply come on board and browse the shelves. Choose your favourite titles, and you’ll be given a return envelope to send them back when you’re done.
Easy peasy!
Option 2: Borrow remotely (by post)
- Sign up for an annual membership (click here to join).
- After submitting the form, your account will be activated within 24–48 hours. You’ll receive an email with your login and password.
- Visit the library catalog. Click “Patron Login” on the left (on mobile, open the menu and tap “Patron Login”).
- Browse the catalog and click on any title to view more information.
- Click “Checkout” on the book(s) you’d like to borrow.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page, tap “Complete” and then “Submit”. Your order is now sent to us.
- Our team will pack your books and post them to you on the next business day. Books typically arrive within 3–5 business days.
How do I return a book?
Your book will arrive in a bubble mailer inside the post. Inside the mailer you’ll also find a pre-paid return satchel.
- Keep the original bubble mailer.
- When you’re finished reading, place the book back into the bubble mailer.
- Put the bubble mailer inside the pre-paid satchel and seal it.
- Drop the satchel into any red Australia Post street posting box, or lodge it at any post office counter.
Postage is covered by the RJMPL both ways – it won’t cost you anything.
How much does it cost?
Library memberships are:
- $36 per year per household
- $18 per year subsidised option available
Once you’ve signed up and your account is activated, there are no extra fees to borrow books. Just treat your books with respect and return them on time.
How long can I borrow a book for?
You can borrow each book for up to 2 weeks from when you receive it.
The 2-week loan period:
- begins when the book arrives at your door, and
- ends when you drop the return satchel off for mailing back to us.
Please return your books on time so the next person can enjoy them too.
How many books can I borrow at a time?
You can borrow 2 books at a time. This helps make sure everyone has a chance to find a title they’ll enjoy.
Want more? Great! Just return the books you have, and then you’re welcome to borrow more.
What happens if I damage or lose a book?
Please treat the books with a great deal of love – we want them to be around for a very long time.
If you accidentally damage a book, please send it back to us as soon as possible so we can assess the damage and, if we can, repair it.
If a book is lost, please get in touch with us as soon as you can. A replacement fee will be charged so we can purchase a new copy for the library.
This is great! How can I make a donation?
Thank you – donations are most welcome and help us purchase more books and keep the library running.
Donations to the RJMPL Library are fully tax deductible in Australia. (Donations to the wider Chabad of RARA organisation are not tax deductible, but library donations are.)
