THE miracle of Chanukah was not just the oil lasting for eight days and nights at least not for the small Jew-ish community of Shoalhaven, on the south coast of NSW.

Just a day before the first night of the festival, Chanukah candles along with other festival items still had not made it from Melbourne to Deanne Rosenthal's home.

Rosenthal had organised a Chanukah celebration to take place the next day only the second of its kind in Worrigee.

The package containing the Chanukah items was sent from Chabad of Rural and Regional Australia in Melbourne, but never made it to Rosenthal, who blamed the "let down" on Australia Post.

So a new package had to be resent, this time from Sydney by Chanoch Sufrin of North Shore Chabad House, who is studying to become a rabbi.

He found a Jewish lady who was travelling from Neutral Bay to Shoal-haven to join the festivities on the south coast. So he hired a taxi and sent the package to Neutral Bay.

About 40 people attended from across the Southern Coast most of whom, but not all, were Jewish.

The chanukiah was provided by Shoalhaven sculptor Ofer Engel.
